Personality
disorders - Narcissistic personality disorder
In the description
below a stereotype is used to give you an idea of the disorder. However,
not all people who have this disorder display all these
characteristics, and not all people have these characteristics to the
same degree.
Description
These people think they are better than others. They only care about
themselves and care little for other people. They do need other people
to confirm them in their greatness.
Normal
It is said sometimes that in a way, everyone is egoistic. This is caused
by the egocentric interpretation everyone has of 'the world'. Although
we like to place the human race on a pedestal, we in fact are not very
different from animals. Just like an animal, a human is motivated to
explore the world around him in a way that fulfills his desires. We
all become very egoistic when we are deprived of food or water for a
long some time. Or when we are the victim of chronic pain. Even when
these basic needs are fulfilled, we still have this egocentric viewpoint.
It is in our best interest to make sure we are not abused, or taken
advantage of to much.
Abnormal
Your behavior is narcissistic, when you are not interested in other
people at all. Narcissistic people like to be in control. You often
find them at influential positions, for example in business or in politics.
Sometimes this narcissistic character can be very useful. They can fire
hundreds of employees without feeling guilty about it.
